Bartlett Unit 17 students build £19.5k ‘ghost chapel’ in Connemara
Students from the Bartlett’s Unit 17 have built this chapel inspired by St MacDara’s Oratory in Connemara, Western Ireland
The 6th-century island chapel in Connemara was originally built as a shrine to St MacDara and locals would make a pilgrimage to the island every year on 17 July. But in recent years weather conditions have made the sea crossing impossible and the student project sought to create an alternative mainland structure.
The fourth year architecture students based their design for the £19,500 scheme on the chapel’s granite stones aiming to recreate the weathered mortar joints of the existing building from cast concrete.
The project will be completed on site in Ireland in July 2017.
