Prestigious UKCW Role Models campaign returns to celebrate construction’s unsung heroes
The search is on for the construction sector’s unsung heroes as entries open for this year’s UK Construction Week Role Models awards.
Shining a spotlight on professionals reshaping what it means to work in the construction industry today, UKCW Role Models recognises individuals across every corner of the built environment who are stepping up to meet complex challenges and drive progress.
With three categories to choose from, nominations are open to anyone working in the sector, including architecture, engineering, construction technology and property development. Aimed at inspiring professionals to share their stories and career journeys, the shortlist will be announced at UKCW London (12-14 May), with the winner crowned at UKCW Birmingham (29 September – 1 October).
The three categories are:
- Rising Star – Celebrating the next generation of talent making waves early in their careers. These individuals bring fresh ideas, energy and ambition to the built environment proving that the future of construction is in good hands.
- Pioneer – A trailblazer who pushes boundaries, embraces innovation and challenges the status quo. Pioneers who are a driving force behind progress, setting new standards for excellence and inspiring others to follow their lead.
- Icon – Visionaries whose influence and leadership have left a lasting mark on the industry. Icons who embody the best of construction: experience, integrity and a lifelong commitment to driving positive change.
Last year’s UKCW Role Models winners were Rising Star – Virtue Igbokwuwe, Assistant Project Manager at Ringway; Pioneer – Olayemi Usman, Cost Consultant at Turner & Townsend; and Icon – David Stevens, Director of Estates, Facilities & Capital Development at East London NHS Foundation Trust.
Virtue Igbokwuwe commented: “Even being shortlisted felt like recognition of the collective effort we put into promoting our industry. This award is a real confidence boost, and being a STEM Ambassador is something I’m deeply passionate about and I’ll continue championing this amazing industry at every opportunity.”
Olayemi Usman added: “Winning an award is good recognition because it shows what I’ve been doing in the industry for the last few years, being a pioneer. This category means a lot, and there’s more to do and more ground to cover.”
David Stevens said: “The construction industry is at its best when it’s inclusive. When inclusivity, collaboration, innovation and professionalism come together, we can do great things; and I’m proud to play a part in that journey.”
Sam Patel, Divisional Director, Construction, said: “The UKCW Role Models awards celebrate the individuals who are driving change and innovation in the construction sector, and whose work and dedication may have previously gone unrecognised. It’s the perfect chance to shine a light on your achievements, demonstrate your unique skills and inspire others. Every year, we are wowed by the remarkable stories we see, highlighting the diverse career paths and opportunities available, while encouraging the next generation of industry leaders.”
Bringing together construction leaders, innovators and decision makers from across the industry, UKCW London will run alongside both Futurebuild and The Stone & Surfaces Show to create the UK’s Built Environment super event.
Together, the events will bring 25,000 built environment professionals, 600+ exhibitors and 700+ speakers across six dedicated stages under one roof. Designed to reflect the full scale, complexity and ambition of an industry facing unprecedented change, it unites the entire built environment in one place – where every stage of a project gets decided.
Sponsored by Sage, Wyre, HotelPlanner, Zurich Resilience Solutions and Build Warranty, UKCW London will feature over 300 leading brands; over 25 trade bodies and associations, including the Federation of Master Builders, CIBSE, and the National Association Of Air Duct-Cleaners UK; 200 speakers and over 150 hours of CPD accredited seminars across stages.
