Lanes is on the road to the Highways Awards

Drainage and wastewater specialist Lanes Group plc has been named as a finalist in the prestigious Highways Awards 2023.

It has been recognised in a joint submission with supplier WinCan for its innovative use of highways drainage inspection systems.

Lanes has been shortlisted in the Product of the Year category in the awards – the longest-running in the highways sector, celebrating their 20th anniversary this year.

Its teams are using a digital scanning device, CleverScan, supplied by asset management software specialist WinCan, which eliminates the need for confined space entries to inspect highways drainage chambers.

The highly portable equipment also accelerates the inspection process and provides contractors with richer and more accurate information for the structure and condition of drainage assets.

Data captured by CleverScan and other powerful CCTV drainage surveying systems is now being sent by Lanes engineers via the cloud to a new national data processing centre solely for highways projects.

Lanes Head of Highways Ben Forsyth said:

“We’re delighted our determination to provide highways contractors and the UK’s national highways agencies with a fully-integrated drainage service has been recognised.

“By working with WinCan, we can match the latest digital survey systems with an array of other industry-leading services, including highway drainage cleaning, repair and rehabilitation.

“This is providing our clients with an unrivalled integrated highways drainage service that provides faster, safer and more sustainable maintenance, replacement and installation of highways drainage systems.”

WinCan Managing Director Paul Woodhouse said: “WinCan has been partnering with Lanes for 25 years bringing leading technology to the UK’s  drainage and wastewater sectors.

“CleverScan is just one of the latest innovations we’ve launched.  It complements other technologies in the WinCan portfolio that Lanes teams use to add value in the highways sector.”

Lanes services are delivered through a newly-created highways division. Its business and technical managers work with delivery teams in a national network of 20 depots, from Aberdeen to Plymouth.

All Lanes drainage engineers are trained and qualified. Many hold the National Highways Passport with common induction.

The company provides a full suite of surveying and inspection services, including CCTV, GPS, full HADDMS and asset conditions surveys, with in-house professional engineering support, if needed.

Lanes used CleverScan on he A66 Northern Trans-Pennine upgrade, where it doubled the productivity of drainage chamber inspections.

Last year, the company’s sewer and culvert rehabilitation division installed the UK’s largest ultraviolet (UV) pipe liner, with a diameter of 1800mm, beneath a road in Corby.

Lanes was also one of the first specialists to install continuous UV liners in motorway roadside drains – lining drains on the M6 J16-19 smart motorway project to strengthening assets under a new Lane 1.

WinCan is a leading provider of embedded, desktop and cloud solutions for data collection, analysis and rehabilitation planning, covering all aspects of pipeline and chamber condition assessment.

Winners of this year’s Highways Awards will be announced at a ceremony taking place at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on Wednesday 11th October 2023.
