THE DEEP GREEN MISSION
When Boss Cabins set out on their mission to create Deep Green and make it the world’s most sustainable welfare range, the goal was to design a cost-effective product which would:
Maximise the use of free renewable energy
Minimise the costly and environmentally harmful burning of diesel
Minimise CO2 emissions in operation and over the full life cycle of the welfare cabin
Minimise the need to attend the cabin for any reason thereby cutting down on the time, travel and fuel costs and environmental impact of attending the cabin. This includes visits:
- To remove toilet waste
- To refill fuel
- To refill freshwater
- To service generators
- For fault diagnostics

A SOLAR REVOLUTION
By use of advanced solar technology and other eco innovations, Boss Cabins’ patented Deep Green range of mobile and static welfare and portable toilets achieves all the above and more. Figures verified by respected environmental industry watchdog Carbon Footprint Ltd., reveal that using Deep Green welfare on a worksite can cut CO2 emissions by up to 8.4 tonnes per year, cut fuel consumption by 3400 litres and reduce operational costs by over £10,800 per cabin per year.
MAXIMUM SOLAR ENERGY
After careful analysis of the options, Boss Cabins chose to pursue the solar route towards zero emissions and has developed a welfare unit range that based on data gathered in 2022, for 9 months of the year operates solely using the solar energy harvested form the unit’s solar panels, with no generator runtime at all. Even in the depths of winter when the sun is at its lowest and days are shortest, generator runtime is sharply reduced.
During the R&D phase, Boss looked at wind power but found that current-design turbines were ineffective and unfeasible to use on a welfare cabin. They also analysed hydrogen, which can produce zero emissions at point of use, but it was concluded that at present, hydrogen production is generally not sustainable and is a long way from being so. Most hydrogen supplied in UK and world-wide is considered ‘dirty’ due to how much energy and carbon is consumed in producing it. In addition, there are also reported problems with supply and safety with the potential for explosion. And of course, hydrogen is extremely expensive and therefore prohibitive to use on most sites.
CARBON REPORTING
If companies are going to make efforts to lower their carbon footprint, they need to be able to record and judge how successful they are. Deep Green welfare units are fitted with a 24/7 remote online tracking system that allows users to report on how much energy their cabins are using and what source this is coming from – solar or generator – making it simple to calculate fuel savings and CO2 emission reductions. This system also gives precise tank readings for fuel, fresh water and waste enabling laser-precise service planning, avoiding unnecessary visits and saving yet more staff time, fuel expenditure and the environmental impact of having service vehicles on the road.
WATER SAVING
Of course, fossil fuel depletion and CO2-induced climate change are not the only environmental crises the planet faces. Water shortages and drought are fast becoming huge environmental issues in their own right. Deep Green cabins are fitted with an exclusive patented rain harvesting and grey water recycling WM ProTM system designed specifically to reduce water consumption. S an additional bonus, reducing water consumption also lowers waste production, cutting the number of service visits required.
