Weymouth College building a sustainable future for Dorset with Green Skills construction courses
Weymouth College is proud to announce the launch of a new round of courses dedicated to Green Skills in construction, starting this September.
As part of the College’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and excellence in education, these courses are designed to equip professionals with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving construction industry.
Courses starting this September include:
- Domestic, Commercial, and Industrial Electric Vehicle Charging Installation
- Installation and Maintenance of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems
- The Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems (Non-Refrigeration Circuits)
- Introduction to Modern Methods of Construction (MMC)
The courses aim to address the critical skills gap in sustainable construction practices, as identified in the Dorset Local Skills Improvement Plan, and support the industry’s shift towards greener solutions.
The fully-funded courses are targeted towards individuals currently working in the construction industry looking to upskill, construction companies seeking to train their staff in sustainable practices, young professionals and apprentices in the construction sector, and the College is particularly keen to welcome women and underrepresented groups in the construction industry.
As the courses are fully-funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund via Dorset Council, participants can enhance their expertise without any financial burden.
In just two to three days, participants will benefit from expert instruction delivered by experienced staff and industry experts. Training will be held at Weymouth College’s Centre of Excellence for Construction and Building Skills, featuring state-of-the-art facilities.
The centre is being extended this summer, using the same Modern Methods of Construction that are taught in these courses, ensuring real-world application and relevance.
These courses are designed to help overcome modern challenges in the construction industry, promoting diversity and encouraging participation from women and underrepresented groups. By equipping the workforce with the necessary green skills, Weymouth College is actively supporting the transition to more sustainable building practices.
Laura Young, Housing Director at Complex Asset Management Solutions (CAMS), expressed her support.
“Over the past year, I have worked with Weymouth College, supporting them in the development of new housing-related courses. They have been a fantastic company to work with; professional, collaborative, and innovative.
“Their Green Skills courses are particularly relevant and necessary in today’s climate of growing skills shortages and increasing pressures to deliver greener housing solutions.
“The ‘Introduction to Modern Methods of Construction’ course is a valuable addition to the housing and construction sector, providing evidence and support to organizations looking to explore how MMC can support their business to deliver more efficient and environmentally friendly affordable housing across the region.”
Kris Thorne, Head of Curriculum for Construction & Building Services at Weymouth College, added: “Our new round of Green Skills courses are designed to empower the construction workforce with the knowledge and skills required for a sustainable future. We are committed to providing top-tier education and training that meets the needs of the industry and supports the transition to greener building practices.”
