New Formwork Bootcamp Launches to Address London’s Construction Skills Shortage

The Skills Centre, in partnership with CONSTRUCT, has launched a fully funded Construction Skills Bootcamp to tackle the urgent demand for skilled formworkers across London.
As part of the London Skills Bootcamps initiative, this new programme provides Londoners with the opportunity to retrain, upskill, or begin a new career in construction at no cost. Developed in collaboration with employers and CONSTRUCT, which represents approximately 80 per cent of the UK’s concrete frame contractors, the course aims to improve safety, efficiency, and access to skilled jobs in the sector.
Formwork involves creating temporary or permanent moulds for shaping concrete structures, playing a vital role in constructing everything from foundations to high-rise buildings.
Participants will receive six weeks of practical training focused on formwork and carpentry skills, alongside essential health and safety modules. The programme is designed to prepare learners for apprenticeships or traineeships in formwork, equipping them with the skills required for long-term careers in the industry.
Qualifications awarded include:
- Unit of L2 “Knowledge of Fabrication and Repair to Formwork Panels” – The first step toward obtaining a Blue ‘Skilled Worker’ CSCS Card.
- Personal Wellbeing in Construction – Training focused on mental health and resilience in the workplace.
- Environmental Awareness – Education on sustainable construction practices.
- Fire Safety and Working at Heights – Essential skills for high-risk working environments.
Upon completion of the training, candidates will undertake a two-week work placement with one of The Skills Centre’s recruiting employers. They will also receive career support and mentoring to assist in securing sustainable employment or an apprenticeship. Employers will engage with learners throughout the programme, delivering toolbox talks and insights into available roles within the industry.
Sam Downton, Director of The Skills Centre, commented: “The latest CITB report forecasts that more than 251,500 additional construction workers will be needed by 2028. To meet this growing demand, it is imperative that we provide high-quality training to equip individuals with the necessary skills.
“At The Skills Centre, we work closely with employers to ensure our learners develop the expertise that the industry requires. Skills Bootcamps offer an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in construction to take the first step towards a successful career. We are pleased to collaborate with CONSTRUCT and the Greater London Authority to train the next generation of formworkers.”
Ian Burnett, General Manager at Construct said: “CONSTRUCT is proud to partner with The Skills Centre on the fully funded Construction Skills Bootcamp to address the urgent demand for skilled formworkers across London. This initiative will provide hands-on training and real job opportunities, helping to build a strong pipeline of talent for our industry.”
