Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), one of the UK’s leading institutions for education, has appointed GRAHAM Construction to upgrade the School of Mathematical Sciences Building on its Mile End campus.

With over 25,000 students and 4,000 staff, QMUL is highly rated for its teaching, research and engagement activities, and the refurbishment, will modernise the School of Mathematical Sciences Building. Key works will include refurbishing and extending the existing building to provide suitable accommodation, and an overhaul of the building’s envelope to reflect its prominent position on the Mile End campus.

In addition to upgrading the existing building, GRAHAM will also build a new central space that will enhance the high-quality learning experience provided to students at the university. This new social area will allow students to congregate informally or come together for special events.

To protect the lifecycle cost of the building, GRAHAM will reduce energy usage and carbon emissions, targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating.

We are already looking forward to returning next year to a transformed building where students, staff and visitors can work together in a fantastic new environment. It will make a huge difference to the School to have a state-of-the-art space to work and study in.”

Rob Joyce, GRAHAM Construction’s London office director, said: “Once complete, the School of Mathematical Sciences building will provide an inspiring, collaborative space for QMUL’s community of students and staff. As well as high quality teaching rooms, there will be a range of private and group study areas throughout the building in addition to more informal social areas. We will work closely with QMUL to ensure that these works are delivered on time and on budget, while drawing on our extensive experience of delivering complex refurbishment projects for the education sector.”

GRAHAM’s portfolio of education projects includes University College London (UCL), The University of Reading, The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Kingsgate Primary School in the London Borough of Camden, and a multi-million pound Learning and Skills Centre for Lambeth College.

Completion is due in April 2019.
