GFT Long service awards 2025

Construction Group, G F Tomlinson, has proudly honoured 20 of its longest-serving employees at a special Long Service Awards ceremony, recognising a remarkable collective loyal commitment of over 600 years across the business.

The event, held at the company’s head office in Derby, saw a cross section of employees throughout the company including Site Operatives, Site Management, Business Development, Health and Safety, Accounts and Company Directors celebrated for reaching milestones of between 25 years and 38 years of continual service.

Hosted by Group Chairman Andy Sewards, the event included a heartfelt speech expressing gratitude not only to the award recipients but all the other employees who attended, followed by a company lunch where colleagues had the chance to celebrate together. Each recipient was presented with an engraved commemorative award, as a token of appreciation for their loyalty and dedication.

Among the longest-serving staff recognised were Paul Thornewill, senior contracts manager, with an exceptional 38 years of service; Tony Lamb and Robert McDonald, bricklayer and groundworker respectively, each with 37 years of service; Stephen Parker, director & company secretary, with 36 years of service; and Matt Smith, site manager, celebrating 34 years with the business.

Robert McDonald, who officially retired in March 2025, was honoured not just for his own service, but also for inspiring the next generation – his son, Robert McDonald Junior, is now part of the team.

Group chairman, Andy Sewards, said of the awards: “At G F Tomlinson, our people are our greatest asset. Celebrating long service is not just about the number of years, but the impact each individual has made to the company over time. The experience, loyalty and commitment shown by our team is what drives our continued success, and it’s a privilege to recognise and thank them for their invaluable contribution.”

Les Needham, head of business development, who marked 26 years of service himself, added: “It’s a real testament to the culture and values of G F Tomlinson that so many of us have built our careers here. There’s always been opportunity, respect, and a genuine sense of team spirit.”

G F Tomlinson’s high retention rates are underpinned by a strong commitment to staff development, competitive benefits, and a supportive environment with clear routes for progression. Many of the award recipients joined in trainee or junior roles and have since risen through the ranks – a testament to the company’s long-standing investment in its people.

As the business continues to deliver a robust pipeline of projects across the Midlands and beyond, G F Tomlinson remains a trusted contractor of choice. With a skilled and experienced workforce at its heart, the company looks forward to continued growth and success.
