Building future careers: Wates Construction joins The Bedford College Group Employer Partnership Scheme

The Bedford College Group has welcomed Wates Construction as the latest organisation to join its Employer Partnership Scheme, further strengthening links between education and industry and creating new opportunities for students across Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire.

Part of the Wates Group, one of the UK’s leading family-owned development, building and property maintenance companies, Wates Construction has a longstanding relationship with The Bedford College Group. In recent years, the company has supported apprentices studying Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery and Level 3 Business Administration programmes, helping students develop valuable workplace skills and industry experience.

The new partnership will see Wates Construction expand its engagement with students and staff across the Group. Through the Employer Partnership Scheme, employers commit to supporting a range of activities throughout the academic year, helping students gain real-world experience and a better understanding of industry expectations and career opportunities.

Wates Construction has already demonstrated its commitment to inspiring young people by attending careers fairs at The Bedford Sixth Form and Central Bedfordshire College, where representatives met students, shared insights into the construction sector and highlighted the wide range of careers available within the industry.

As part of the partnership, Leanne Walton, Social Value Manager at Wates Construction South, has joined the College’s Construction Industry Advisory Boards and will provide valuable employer insight to support curriculum development and ensure courses continue to meet industry needs. Leanne has also signed up to become a student mentor, providing guidance and support to students as they prepare for their future careers.

Looking ahead, Wates Construction is keen to create even more opportunities for students, including work experience placements, T Level industry placements, site visits, careers events, specialist industry talks and project-based learning activities.

Leanne Walton said: “We are delighted to be joining The Bedford College Group’s Employer Partnership Scheme and to build on our existing relationship with the Group. Supporting young people and helping them understand the opportunities available within the construction industry is incredibly important to us, and we look forward to creating valuable experiences that will inspire and develop future talent.”

Rachel Roberts, Partnership Manager at The Bedford College Group, said: “We are pleased to welcome Wates Construction as an Employer Partner and build on a relationship that has already delivered positive outcomes for our students. The team’s enthusiasm for supporting young people, combined with their commitment to mentoring, work experience and industry insight, will create valuable opportunities for students across the Group. We look forward to working together to help develop the skills and confidence the students need for successful careers.”

The partnership reflects The Bedford College Group’s ongoing commitment to working closely with employers to ensure students gain the skills, knowledge and experience needed for successful careers, while supporting local businesses and the wider regional economy.
