Why Sunscreen is a Must-Have Tool on the Construction Site

When we talk about essential gear on a construction site, the conversation usually revolves around hard hats, steel-toed boots, high-visibility vests, and safety harnesses. But there’s one vital item that often gets overlooked, sunscreen!

Construction workers spend hours exposed to the sun, often during peak UV radiation times. This exposure doesn’t just lead to sunburns, it can cause long-term skin damage, increase the risk of skin cancer, and accelerate premature aging. Therefore, protecting your skin should be as routine as wearing a helmet.

The Reality of Sun Exposure on the Job

Most construction jobs require workers to be outdoors, often without access to shade for extended periods. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can still reach the skin. The cumulative effect of this exposure is significant:

  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, and outdoor workers are at a much higher risk.
  • UV radiation can cause not just burns, but also DNA damage that leads to melanoma and other serious skin cancers.
  • Heat-related illnesses can be made worse by sunburns, which reduce the body’s ability to cool itself.

Sunscreen: A Simple, Effective Layer of Protection

Sunscreen acts as a barrier against harmful UV rays. Here’s how to use it properly on the job:

  • Choose SPF 30 or higher.
  • Apply 15–30 minutes before sun exposure. This allows it to fully absorb and activate.
  • Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if sweating heavily.
  • Don’t forget commonly missed areas like ears, neck, the back of the hands, and any exposed scalp.

More Than Personal Health, it’s Workplace Safety!

Employers have a responsibility to protect workers from environmental hazards, including the sun.

  • Include sun safety in toolbox talks and safety training.
  • Encourage breaks in shaded areas and educate about UV exposure risks.

Just as you wouldn’t step onto a job site without your boots or helmet, you shouldn’t face a day in the sun without sunscreen.

That’s why Keyfix is proud to play a role in spreading awareness about sun safety; they’re including sunscreen in every pallet heading to sites, because your health is as important as your craftsmanship.
