Construction Charity Ride Raises Over £22,000 to Tackle Mental Health Crisis in the Industry

Charities Construction Sport and the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) have partnered in organising a 300-mile coast-to-coast bike ride which raised over £22,000 to help tackle the construction industry’s deepening mental health crisis.

15 riders embarked on the ride from Hinkley Point C to Sizewell C nuclear plants over four days as part of a bold initiative tackling mental health challenges in the construction industry – one of the sectors with the highest suicide risk in the UK. More than just raising awareness, the ride was a proactive effort to drive real change by opening up conversations, breaking down stigma, and encouraging those who are struggling to seek support.

The money raised will help Construction Sport advance its mission to support the mental health of those working in the construction industry by creating opportunities for workers to decompress through sport and social engagement in safe, positive environments.

Volunteers from the RRT followed the riders along the route, providing quality barista-grade coffee and snacks to fuel their journey and serving well-earned burger meals at the finish line at Sizewell C.

Roland Coldrick, an RRT volunteer, said:

“When the RRT learnt about the devastating mental health statistics in the construction industry, we knew we had to take action. It’s been a privilege to support Construction Sport in their 300-mile bike ride and be there along the way with coffees and refreshments to keep momentum high and spirits lifted.

“It was fantastic seeing them cross the finish line, and we were overwhelmed by their positive energy and commitment to make a change in the industry. At the RRT, we are dedicated to putting compassion into action, and we know how important good mental health is. Such initiatives are great ways to raise awareness, break the stigma, and show those who are struggling that they’re not alone.”

Steve Kerslake, Founder of Construction Sport, said:

“I am incredibly proud of the Construction Sport Team to have completed the Coast-to-Coast Nuclear Cycling Challenge. It was a physically and mentally demanding journey for every participant, but the strength of teamwork carried us through. With suicide rates continuing to rise in construction, charities like Construction Sport are stepping up and making noise where it’s desperately needed.

“We’re deeply grateful to Hinkley and Sizewell nuclear sites for supporting this event, and the warm welcome from the Mayor at the finish line in Sizewell reminded us that people are listening, and that change is possible. We look forward to partnering with more construction companies to help spread this message even further.”
