Harley Haddow supports restoration of Edinburgh University’s historic Teviot building
Multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, Harley Haddow, has played a key role in the extensive refurbishment of Teviot Row House, one of Edinburgh University’s most iconic and historic buildings.
The Category B-listed student union building, widely recognised as the oldest purpose-built facility of its kind in the world, has reopened following a comprehensive renovation programme to bring the 19th-century structure up to modern standards, preserving historic elements, where possible.
Working on the project in the capacity of mechanical and electrical engineers, Harley Haddow delivered specialist support that carefully integrated modern systems within the complex heritage environment. The approach balanced the need to upgrade performance, accessibility and safety while retaining the building’s architectural integrity, as best as possible.
Following extensive assessments and modelling, Harley Haddow comprised a range of design solutions which modernised and upgraded building performance. These included improved accessibility, upgraded lighting, modern-day communications & AV facilities and upgrades to heating, ventilation & associated controls. The requirements of each individual space was carefully considered with the optimum design solutions being developed and ultimately delivered.
Commenting on the project, Martin Stewart, associate director at Harley Haddow, said: “Teviot is a hugely important building, not just for the University but for Edinburgh as a whole.
“Projects of this nature require an extremely complex balance of upgrading, systems, performance and usability while respecting the fabric and history of the building.
“Our role was to carefully integrate modern building services in a way that supports the next chapter of Teviot’s life, without losing what makes it special.
“It’s a great example of how thoughtful and sensitive engineering solutions can help future-proof heritage buildings.
“We’re incredibly proud of our involvement in this project and are delighted to see it officially reopen with students now enjoying the space.”
The project is a finalist within two categories at the Scottish Design Awards – ‘Conservation’ and ‘Retrofit’. The awards gala will take place in Glasgow’s Double Tree Hotel by Hilton on 24th June 2026.
Harley Haddow has a strong track record in higher education and heritage projects, including work at the University of Glasgow, as well as the refurbishment of St Cecilia’s Hall (Edinburgh).
