Three new developments being built by Bellway West Midlands have been highly commended at the inaugural Homebuilder Safety Awards.

Whitford Heights in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, Arden Glade in Keresley, near Coventry, and Baldwins Gate Grange in Baldwins Gate, Staffordshire were all highly commended in the Best Large Builder category for the Midlands region at the awards ceremony held at the Grand Hotel in Birmingham.

Held for the first time this year, the awards recognise the hard work and dedication of site teams to drive up health and safety standards across the industry.

Nick Edmond, Construction Director at Bellway’s West Midlands division, based in Tamworth, said: “To claim a hat-trick of commendations at the first Homebuilder Safety Awards is no small achievement and is testament to the hard work, diligence and professionalism of our construction teams at the three sites.

“I would like to congratulate our trio of site managers – Joe O’Toole at Arden Glade, Chris Bennett at Whitford Heights and Ben Taylor at Baldwins Gate Grange – for their exemplary work. Overseeing a site is a complicated process and the site manager is only as good as their team, so a big thank you must go to their colleagues too.

“It is good news upon good news for Chris because earlier this year he won a prestigious Seal of Excellence in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) annual Pride in the Job competition for the quality of his work at Whitford Heights.

“The safety and wellbeing of everyone who works on, or visits, a Bellway West Midlands site is of the utmost importance, and these achievements reflect the high standards we strive to set across all our developments.”

Sites that enter the Homebuilder Safety Awards are assessed on a range of criteria including occupational health, manual handling, fire safety, working at height, safety signs, lifting operations and documentation. There are categories for best small, medium, large and multi-storey builder.

The sites taking part receive at least two unannounced assessment visits and a third visit if they are shortlisted for their region.

Bellway developments won the first prize for the North, Midlands and South West regions – making it the developer with the most regional wins in the Best Large Builder category. Bellway was also highly commended for a further 10 sites, in addition to the three West Midlands commendations – more than any other housebuilder across all categories.
