Site manager wins third prestigious housebuilding award

A site manager who started his working life as an apprentice bricklayer has won his third coveted housebuilding award.

Mark Tattershall, who is site manager at Vistry Group’s Hampton Water location in Peterborough, has won a Pride in the Job Quality Award from the National House Building Council (NHBC) in recognition of his excellent work at the development.

The annual awards celebrate the best site managers in the UK and Mark is one of 443 winners this year, selected from a pool of 8,000 site managers from across the country. The recipients will now be considered for the Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards in the autumn.

This latest award comes after Mark, 57, won the Pride in the Job Quality Award and a Seal of Excellence last year, also for his work at Hampton Water.

Vistry, which includes Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Vistry Partnerships, is building 327 new homes under the Bovis Homes brand at Hampton Water. The site will feature 287 new homes for private sale and 40 affordable properties available for local people through rent or shared ownership.

Mark worked his way up into a management role after starting in the construction industry as an apprentice bricklayer at a building site in Leicester in 1981.

Mark, who lives in Wigston, Leicester, joined what was Linden Homes as an assistant site manager in 2014 and was appointed site manager at a development in Rugby in 2018. In 2020 he took over as site manager at Hampton Water for Vistry East Midlands.

“I was only a teenager when I began my journey in this industry, but I got stuck in and received my City and Guilds qualifications,” he said. “Even then I knew I had to try to switch to management because I wanted to use my brain as much as my hands.

“Over the years I kept listening and learning and after I joined Linden Homes they saw fit to give me my first chance as a site manager four years ago. I think the knowledge and experience I have accumulated after working my way up the ladder enables me to communicate more easily with the trades people, the sales staff and my site team.

“It feels just as fantastic to win this award this year as it did last year. In fact, in some ways it feels better to win it again as it is testament to the time and effort that myself and my team continue to put into the job here. There is no doubt that the support I get from the group of people around me has enabled me to win this award.

“Vistry East Midlands is a great place to work and I want to stay here and carry on producing my best and keep on winning awards.”

Fraser Hopes, managing director for Vistry East Midlands, said: “This award is recognition of the hard work and dedication that Mark has put in to maintain his exceptionally high standards.

“Winning one award is hard enough to do but to win three in successive years like this is quite remarkable. We asked Mark to take over as site manager at Hampton Water and he has exceeded all expectations in the role.

“He has proved himself to be a brilliant leader who can put together a very happy and efficient team which helps him create a fantastic site.”

There is currently a selection of three and four-bedroom homes available to reserve at Hampton Water, with prices starting at £282,500 and £415,000 respectively.
