J Murphy & Sons snaps up Carillion UK power business

J Murphy & Sons has acquired Carillion’s UK power framework business for an undisclosed sum.

Murphy replaces Carillion in JV with Eltel on T-Pylon programme.

The agreement means Murphy takes over Carillion’s position on National Grid’s electricity overhead lines, substation and underground cable framework contracts.

These frameworks pave the way for Murphy to deliver planned replacement and refurbishment schemes on National Grid’s 33kV to 400kV transmission network spanning England and Wales.

Murphy also replaces Carillion as joint venture partner of Nordic overhead powerline specialist Eltel forming the new MEJV on the overhead line and T Pylon framework.

The Carillion−Eltel JV Alliance agreement was said to have a potential value of £500m over five years, when first formed two years ago.

These three frameworks will deliver essential national infrastructure which includes the 20km, 400Kv overhead line from Richborough to Canterbury that will connect the Nemo Link interconnector from Belgium with the UK transmission network.

Around 22 Carillion staff will join Murphy, broadening the energy infrastructure services offered to their power customers.

This expertise now includes designing and installing overhead power lines, substations and major underground systems, complementing existing capabilities in civil engineering and tunnelling.

John Murphy, CEO at Murphy, said: “This represents an excellent strategic fit for the business, allowing us to bring a full range of services across the power sector for our customers both in the UK and internationally.

“We have a strong sense of purpose, committed to improving lives by delivering world class infrastructure. I’m pleased to be able to work with our new partners Eltel to continue supporting National Grid and deliver essential energy infrastructure.”
