Apprentice Q&As with MJ Gleeson

To close off National Apprenticeship Week, MJ Gleeson apprentices share what inspired them to choose an apprenticeship, the skills they’ve developed, and their advice for those considering this path.
Layla Atkinson
Apprentice Bricklayer, East Yorkshire Region
What inspired you to take the apprenticeship route over other career paths?
I wanted to learn practical skills through hands-on experience while earning an income. I’ve always had a passion for bricklaying, so this felt like the best path to a stable, fulfilling career and a great alternative to the academic route.
How do you balance your work responsibilities with studies and training?
I balance work and training by creating a schedule that allows time for both. I prioritise tasks, break them into smaller goals, and use free time to stay on top of my studies. Clear communication with my employer helps when I need flexibility or support.
David Evans
Information Communications Technician Apprenticeship, Sheffield Head Office
What motivated you to pursue an apprenticeship at this stage in your career?
I had been away from the IT trade for six years and lost touch with current technologies. IT still interested me, so this career path allowed me to update my skills while being employed.
Since completing your apprenticeship, what support and opportunities have you experienced?
Completing the apprenticeship helped me get up to speed with current technology, broaden my knowledge, and improve my soft skills. Gleeson has since supported me with opportunities like the ITIL Foundation V4 course. The most rewarding part was completing the course and becoming a full-time IT team member.
Abbie Townsend
Technical Apprentice, Yorkshire East Region
What skills have you developed as part of your apprenticeship?
I’ve gained so much confidence and improved my computer skills. I haven’t started college yet, but I’m looking forward to it and the additional learning that will come from that part of the apprenticeship.
What advice would you give to other individuals considering an apprenticeship?
I encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship to go for it, especially with a company that truly invests in their development, like Gleeson. My goal is to seize every opportunity and progress as far as possible in my career.
Lewis Ronan
Apprentice Bricklayer, South Yorkshire Region
What advice would you give to anyone considering an apprenticeship in the industry?
Listen and learn from the experience of others while building your own. Always push yourself and embrace challenges, but don’t rush—learning a trade takes time, and doing it at the right pace will help you achieve quality results. Lastly, showing a willingness to learn and develop will encourage your colleagues to support you when needed.
What are your future goals and aspirations?
I’ve completed my Level 2 bricklaying qualification and am now working towards Level 3. After that, I hope to move into subcontracting or pursue a Trainee Assistant Site Manager course. Eventually, I aim to transition into construction management, as it genuinely interests me and aligns with my career aspirations.
