Meadfleet Supports Butterfly Conservation to Boost Biodiversity Across UK Developments

Meadfleet is proud to announce its corporate membership of Butterfly Conservation, a leading UK charity dedicated to protecting butterflies, moths, and the habitats they depend on. This sponsorship marks an exciting next step in Meadfleet’s ongoing commitment to biodiversity through its Buzz and Flutter campaign.

Building on the success of its award-winning Bee Friendly campaign, Meadfleet continues to champion pollinator protection while expanding its efforts to support a wider range of wildlife — including butterflies, and moths. These species help maintain plant diversity and support healthy ecosystems. They are also key indicators of environmental change, with their populations often reflecting shifts in habitat quality and climate conditions.

“Butterflies and moths are essential to healthy ecosystems, and their decline signals a wider need for action,” said Paul Cassidy, Ecology and Conservation Manager at Meadfleet. “Butterfly Conservation are at the forefront of efforts to protect and nurture wildlife and we are delighted to support their conservation efforts while enhancing the ecological value of the open spaces we manage.”

As part of the Buzz and Flutter campaign, Meadfleet is implementing ambitious habitat-creation targets across its portfolio of over 350 housing developments in England and Wales. These include:

  • Planting 150 oak trees, which support hundreds of insect species including many moths.
  • Creating 1sqm of wildflower planting per home, providing nectar and host plants for eggs and caterpillars.
  • Planting 100,000 flowering bulbs, offering year-round nectar sources.
  • Adding 5km of native hedgerow, enhancing connectivity and habitat structure.

Together, these actions are designed to support butterfly and moth populations throughout their life cycles — from caterpillar to adult — while building more resilient ecosystems across the UK.

Natalie Bridge, Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, Butterfly Conservation commented: “We’re incredibly grateful for Meadfleet’s generous support and commitment to biodiversity. Partnerships like this are vital; they enable us to continue our work protecting butterflies, moths, and the habitats they rely on. Only through such collaboration can we create lasting change for nature and future generations.”.
