RAIB Urgent Safety Advice: Derailment on bridges with longitudinal timber systems
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has issued urgent safety advice as a result of an ongoing investigation into an accident involving a freight train travelling between Peak Forest and Salford which derailed as it passed over a bridge in Audenshaw, Manchester, 6 September 2024.
The advice states that existing inspection and maintenance regimes may not be sufficient to detect the failure of baseplate chair screws, which can lead to a loss of lateral track support in longitudinal timber systems.
